My Eczema Struggle - How I Got Rid of my Eye Eczema

I first wrote my blog post about my struggle with sensitive skin and eye eczema on my blog, Lux Life London, back in 2012. I had been struggling with extreme eye eczema on my eyelids, that caused the area around my eyes to flare-up in the most horrific red, swollen, dry mess. It was so bad that flakes of skin from my eyelid would fall onto my eyelashes and I would wake up every day with my eyes so swollen that they were frequently swollen shut.
That blog post and the products I tried and tested after it, is what sparked my love and passion for natural skincare and beauty, because one of those products became my miracle cream, and led to over ten years of testing and trying other creams to find what works and what doesn’t work on eye eczema and eczema on the face.

The Creams That Changed My Life

That very first cream that got rid of my eye eczema was the Dr Organics Manuka Honey Rescue Cream.

And since then, other creams I have added to my ‘fixes my eczema’ list are: Balmonds Skin Salvation, MooGoo MSM Cream, Shea Butter, and Caudalie SOS Vinosource Serum.

My Eczema History

I’ve had eczema for as long as I can remember. There isn’t a time where I can’t remember having it. When I was a child I would always get it under my knees and in the inside of my elbows, and I had to bathe in E45 emollient.
It would usually strike during Autumn and Winter when the heating came on and cold weather arrived, and for some reason when I was a child seawater also flared it up. I loved swimming in the ocean, but as soon as I got out I would be covered in an eczema rash and would need to rinse off with cold tap water.
Nothing had ever really worked for treating my eczema, I’d always had to just bear with it and let it run its course until it went down by itself. Although the bath emollient worked, the E45 cream has never worked on my skin, and I feel as though I’ve tried every product out there, from natural to chemical. The only good thing about it being under my knees and in my elbows, was that I could cover it up with clothing, so no one had to see it.
When I was 14 I finally found the perfect solution. I was back in Australia for a holiday and we went down to Albany for a week. We visited the Sandalwood Factory down there and I found Mount Romance Damage Control. At the time I was suffering from eczema really badly, and within a few hours of using the Damage Control ointment, it was already going down.
I also had a huge patch of eczema on my left wrist, it was so sore it looked diseased, it was a huge spread of eczema rash all across my wrist and was so dry it was cracking and bleeding. After a couple of days of applying Damage Control every hour, it had completely disappeared.

Eczema Around Eyes

Then disaster struck. I started getting eczema on my eyelids and under-eye. I couldn’t hide the eczema around my eyes with clothing. It was on show for all to see, and it was humiliating. My eyes were bright red and cracked – it looked as though there was something seriously wrong with me, and although eczema is not contagious, it looked like it was. Despite the Damage Control telling me not to use it on eyes, I did, and it worked. It stung like hell, but it worked.

Allergy Tests & Mould Allergy

In 2010 I had allergy tests done, and I discovered the reason behind my eczema and eyelid eczema: I’m allergic to mould. This also explains why my asthma is worse during autumn. Asthma and eczema are connected, and the mould flares them both up.
During autumn when the leaves fall off the trees, they decay on the ground and mould spores rise into the air, getting into your lungs and going onto your skin. For those who are allergic, it’s a nightmare, and different people have different reactions to it.

My Worst Eyelid Eczema Flare-Up Ever

In August 2012 the eczema around eyes flared up again, but this time the Damage Control didn’t work. My trusty saviour for the past seven years had failed me, and I’d just started my very first ‘grown-up’ job in London – so I needed something else that would work ASAP to get rid of my eyelid eczema.
Incredibly painful, itchy and completely unsightly, my eyes were red raw with the skin flaking off, and I was waking up with my eyes completely swollen and with wrinkles underneath. One morning it was so bad I couldn’t even see out of my left eye.
I spent ages sitting there with a bag of frozen peas on them before leaving for work, and as you can imagine, my tube journeys to work involved me keeping my head down so no one could see the eczema around my eyes. I felt myself constantly worrying about what people were thinking when they looked at me.

Eye Eczema Products That Didn't Work

I hate to think about the amount of money I spent over the course of two months buying and trying new products to get rid of my eyelid eczema.

I tried every natural remedy in Holland and Barrett, Body Shop, Boots and Superdrug. From Vitamin E to the Body Shop Hemp products, Aloe Vera gel, and I even went back to trying E45.

Eventually I went back to the Doctor and reluctantly agreed to try Hydrocortizone, a steroid that thins the skin. After three days of usage the eczema around eyes cleared up. But four days later it was back with a vengeance, and this time the Hydrocortizone didn’t work.

E45 Intensive Recovery Worked But is Full of Chemicals

So I started using the E45 Intensive Recovery for ‘very dry skin’, and to be honest, it was amazing. I’d been using it regularly on my eyelids for a few days, and they were back to being smooth and the eye eczema cleared up.
But then I read an article on the chemicals inside it the product, and learnt that some of them are actually very toxic. I was furious that the Doctor told me to put this on my EYES of all places! Not only does E45 contain Sodium Sulphates, but it also contains Propylparaben, which is an irritant that even has links to causing cancer.

Trying to find eye Eczema Products That Actually WORK

So I was back to square one. I stopped using the E45, and once again I had to find something else to fix my eye eczema that was natural and organic.
The problem is I didn’t know where to start, which brand to trust to help my eyelid eczema, and at the time I honestly couldn’t afford to keep spending all this money on products I would use a few times before realizing they were not going to work or were making it worse.
Not only was my eye eczema horrible and disgusting to look at, but having eczema around eyes is also incredibly painful. The constant pain and itch stressed me out, and when it was particularly bad I can feel my heart racing from the stress and pain of having eye eczema.

How I Found My Perfect Eye Eczema Cream

After testing lots of creams, ointments, and serums, both organic and chemical-based, I found my eye eczema miracle cream. Over the past decade it has saved my eyes from eczema, and I have had thousands of messages and comments over the years from others telling me that it has helped with their eczema around the eyes and face.

I first tried this cream shortly after I originally wrote this post for Lux Life in November 2012, and over ten years on, in 2023, I still use it and it still works every time I have an eye eczema flare up.
It’s important to remember though that products don’t always work for everyone, so what may work for me and others may not necessarily work for you, but given the strong feedback from so many, I think it’s worth a try if you’re stuck trying to find something that soothes and calms down your eye eczema.
I regularly get emails and comments from people thanking me for recommending this cream as it worked so great for their eye eczema and eczema around eyes, so watch the video below to see if it’s something you might want to try, and you can purchase it here if you’re in the UK, and from here if you’re in the USA or Canada.

Switching to Organic Make-up

I also realised I needed to start using completely natural eye make-up, as I discovered that all of my normal eye make-up (eyeshadow, eyeliner), were all full of those nasty chemicals that can irritate the skin and make eczema worse. But just like with the skincare products, I just couldn’t afford to keep buying products unless I knew that they’d definitely work.
So, I scoured resources online, did A LOT of research, a lot of personal testing, and found all of the products that DO work (and those that don’t). And not only did I create lists of them all for you, but I created this entire website – The Eczema Store – to help eczema sufferers just like me find products that are gentle on sensitive skin and won’t flare-up eczema!

where to buy the cream

Thank you so much for getting this far and reading my story!

My aim with The Eczema Store is to help others who suffer from this horrible condition to find products that don’t flare-up their eczema and make it worse. I know first-hand how awful it is being covered in rashy and dry skin, and that horrid feeling when you use a skincare product and it causes a flare-up.

All of the products that are included on this site are products I have personally tested and know that they don’t cause a reaction to my own sensitive skin. Of course, everyone’s skin is different, but I hope that this is at least a starting place for you, and that if you’re currently at the point that I was, where I felt hopeless and defeated and didn’t know what to try, that you’ll try this cream and see if it works.
