Last weekend I went up to visit my grandma and have some time in the deep depths of the welsh mountains, a weekend of fresh air, running through the heather, and playing fetch in the lake with Dylan.
We were only up in Wales for two days, but we managed to pack a lot in. We went to Llangollen to see the steam train, went up to the Horseshoe Pass for a run up the
mountain and a hot chocolate in the Ponderosa Cafe, and we also managed to get over to Ellesmere lake so Dylan could go swimming (he
loooooves swimming),
and we visited Chirk Castle!
So I thought I’d tell you a bit more about Llangollen and the surrounding area, and all the great things to do there!
The Horseshoe Pass
The Horseshoe Pass is one of my favourite places in
North Wales. It’s an absolutely stunning viewpoint, and is incredible no matter what the weather or time of year. If anything, I prefer it in the autumn/winter months when it’s all looking very dramatic! Dylan loves it too, especially hiding in the heather!
I have the best childhood memories at the Horseshoe Pass: winters dunking hot chips into hot chocolate at the no-frills transport cafe, running up the mountain pass with my Dad, dragging my Grandma up, and the drive up there is also absolutely beautiful.
Llangollen
Llangollen is the cutest little town in North Wales. My grandma lives in a village nearby, so we often visit Llangollen when we visit my grandma. Again, it’s filled with fond memories from childhood – especially jumping over rocks in the river further up where it’s less precarious, and visiting the old railway and seeing the steam trains come in.
Even now, seeing the steam trains is such a thrill and throws me right back to childhood! I adore seeing them come in, it’s always so exciting! The railway station is very traditional, and nothing has really changed in the past century.
Ellesmere Lake
Ellesmere Lake is just over the border in Shropshire in England (although it’s technically called ‘The Mere at Ellesmere’) and is such a lovely place for a walk. It’s a gentle walk but really pretty, and Dylan absolutely loves swimming in the water there. He also had great fun chasing ducks…but thankfully they were faster than him!
A really lovely weekend with my lovely family!
