Norwegian Fjords Day Trip From Bergen to Mostraumen.

As soon as I booked my trip to Bergen in Norway, I knew I wanted to go on a Norwegian Fjord cruise. With only a weekend in Norway though, I wasn’t sure if we would have the time. Thankfully, as Bergen is situated so close to some of the best fjords, you can not only take a day-trip out to the fjords, but you can even book a half-day trip!

And let me tell you, it was the best decision we made on the whole trip – the cruise was absolutely stunning and such a special day out, and I’m so excited to tell you all about it and show you the photos.

So, are you ready to find out all about our cruise day trip from Bergen to Mostraumen? Let’s go!

Bergen to Mostraumen Fjord Cruise Norway

Bergen to Mostraumen Fjord Cruise

We decided to book the Bergen to Mostraumen cruise which takes 3.5 hours – the boat leaves at 10am and brings you back to Bergen by 1:30pm. With just the weekend in Bergen, we thought this would give us the perfect taste of the fjords without taking up our entire weekend.

I’ve previously worked with bespoke travel agency Original Travel, and so they very kindly offered to book our tickets for us, but you can also book them direct through the cruise company, Rødne. I would definitely recommend booking in advance so you’re guaranteed a spot on the boat, as it does sometimes sell out.

Clothing to wear on a fjord day trip

We did the fjord cruise in February, and although the air temperature wasn’t too cold (around 2 degrees celcius, which was the same as back home in London at the time), on the boat it was really really cold. It was quite windy which made the cold feel absolutely bitter, so please learn from our mistakes as we didn’t wear the right clothing at all! I mean, just look at what I was wearing haha…

Firstly, you’ll want gloves, hat, scarf, a thick coat, layers, and boots. You’ll also need sunglasses as the glare can be quite blinding if the sun is shining on snow or the water.

As you can see, we did not have boots, hats or gloves, and our hands in particular were FROZEN. Personally I can’t stand wearing hats, so I wouldn’t have worn one anyway, but I really do wish I had taken gloves and my snow boots. When I was packing I just didn’t think I’d need my snow boots and thought I might look a bit silly, but everyone in Bergen was wearing them!

There is a large and heated indoor area on the boat to warm up in and sit if you get chilly, but we found we wanted to be out on the deck the whole time because it gave the best views and was just so beautiful. So definitely take plenty of warm clothing if you go in the winter time! And don’t forget your sunnies and sunscreen – all year round!

What you’ll see on the Bergen to Mostraumen fjord cruise

After landing in Bergen on the Friday night, we woke up early on Saturday morning excited for the cruise! We queued up to board the boat at the Zachariasbryggen quay in Bergen around 9:30am, and soon we were setting sail. The boat is modern and not too big, it’s a nice size and has plenty of seating as well as a little cafe inside.

As the boat sailed out of the harbour we sailed past Bryggen, the famous row of colourful wooden buildings that are a UNESCO World Heritage site. We rounded a corner and slowly started edging towards the mouth of the 27-kilometer Osterfjord.

We saw beautiful houses lining the river and snowy scenes in the distance.

Then all of a sudden, as we passed Tyssebotnen, the fjord got narrower, and it felt like out-of-nowhere, rocky, snow-capped mountains were rising around us and we were sailing through another world.

Feeling as though we were in the middle of a movie, we looked up in awe at the surrounding scenery. We ventured to the front of the boat and were quite literally almost blown away – it was SO windy at the front that I had to keep a tight grip on my phone and scarf to stop them from blowing away!

The Tjuvasundet strait was super narrow, but as we sailed on past the islands of Storholmen and Rossholmen, our jaws dropped from the beauty of it all. It looked even more beautiful covered in snow, and it truly felt as though we were in a dream.

As we approached the tiny village of Mostraumen we saw the pretty, picture-perfect white school house sitting on the side of the fjord, while the canary-yellow museum sat perched within a thick blanket of snow up on the hill.

Shortly after sailing past Mostraumen the boat sailed towards a large waterfall while one of the boatmen held out a large bucket. We were standing at the front of the boat near the bucket and could feel the spray from the water as it cascaded over the rocks above and down into the water below. The boatmen held the bucket out, and filled it to the brim with the fresh spring water…then they handed out cups so we could all taste it!

It was fresh…so, SO fresh.

From there, we continued up Mofjorden to Mo, a village in the Modalen municipality, which is located in northern Vestland county – a short 1.5 hour drive from Bergen if you fancied driving there instead of cruising.

With only 100 residents, the village is tiny, but super pretty and charming. I really wish the boat would stop there to let you have a wander around, but alas, we only got a view from the water.

And then it was time to head back to Bergen! We stayed inside for the journey back and enjoyed the views from the warmth with a hot chocolate in hand. The route was slightly different on the return journey to make it quicker, so make sure you take the photos you want to take on the way out because you may not get to take them on the way back!

Bergen to Mostraumen Fjord Cruise Norway

We honestly had the best time on the Bergen to Mostraumen half-day cruise. It was the perfect taste of the fjords during our short weekend break in Bergen, and now I’m desperate to return to Norway and do a longer fjord cruise. Next time I’ll just make sure I’m dressed more appropriately with gloves and boots 😉
