One of the main reasons I wanted to go to Denmark was because of Hans Christian Andersen. My favourite of his fairy tales is Thumbelina, with The Little Mermaid coming in a close second. Naturally we had to visit his statue, the place he lived, and The Little Mermaid statue. I dragged my brother along – we walked from our hotel which was right by
Tivoli Gardens, to Nyhavn where Hans Christian Andersen lived, and then to the Little Mermaid statue.
Hans Christian Andersen Statue
Hans Christian Andersen’s statue is right opposite Tivoli Gardens, but sadly there was a guy sitting on it so I couldn’t get a good photo 🙁
Walking to Nyhavn from Tivoli
The walk to Nyhavn from Tivoli was really pretty, we walked passed the canal, Christiansborg Palace, old churches and pretty buildings.

Visiting Nyhavn
We got to Nyhavn and straight away noticed the beautiful brightly coloured dutch-style buildings. A 17th century waterfront, it’s now very touristy and full of cafes, restaurants, and a chinese takeaway. Despite the modern features of the harbour, it still has plenty of character, with lots of wooden barges and ships on the water. Hans Christian Andersen lived in 3 different houses in Nyhavn over the course of 18 years.
There are lots of canal tour boats you can catch from Nyhavn, however we didn’t fancy it as they were around DKK 60 each, and to be honest we’d rather spend that on foo.
Little Mermaid Statue
On our walk to the Little Mermaid statue, we passed a walkathon, which slowed us down considerably as we were trying to work our way through thousands of walkers walking the opposite direction to us. Eventually we made it, had a quick snap with her, and then got the bus over to Frederiksberg.
“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float,
To gain all while you give,
To roam the roads of lands remote,
To travel is to live.”
– Hans Christian Andersen
