Breakfast at German Gymnasium, Kings Cross.

I don’t often go to Kings Cross, usually I only go when I’m going to Paris and need to go to St Pancras for the Eurostar. However it’s been spruced up a bit in recent years, and with the recent arrival of new D&D restaurant, German Gymnasium (if you’re a regular here you’ll know how much of a fan I am of their restaurants), I decided to make the trip to try it out for a lengthy Sunday breakfast. So was it worth the trip? Read on to find out…

I met Amy outside ‘by the swing’ – yes, there is an actual swing out the front – and we headed inside. Even though we catch up frequently with our group of friends, it had been a while since we caught up just the two of us, so what better than to have a proper natter over amazing food in the May sunshine?

We had a peek inside the beautiful restaurant, which is housed inside London’s very first purpose-built gym. Built in 1865 for the German Gymnastics Society, it hosted the indoor events for London’s first Olympic games back in 1866! It’s all very moody and European with dark woods and deep green leather seating everywhere you look. It feels very similar to the likes of The Wolseley and The Delaunay. We had a table inside, but asked to sit outside due to the glorious British weather, and the staff happily obliged and set up a table for us under a big umbrella.

We went all out and started with a Sunday morning cocktail. Amy had the Mexican Garden, and mine…well…I can’t for the life of me remember the name, and it isn’t on the menu online. Sorry! It was a gin based cocktail though and tasted deeeeelicious!

Food-wise I started with the Yoghurt and Granola, while Amy just fancied a good old portion of toast and jam. She said the strawberry jam was the best she’d ever had…and that’s saying something!

Next up we went for the eggs benny options. I really really wanted to try one of the German choices on the menu, but it was just far too warm for that heavy stodgy food. Amy chose the Eggs Arlington with smoked salmon, poached eggs, and Hollandaise potato rosti.

I had the ham option because I can’t stand salmon, and I didn’t spy my favourite spinach option on the menu (pleaseee add it!). The eggs were absolutely perfect, and the Black forest smoked ham was an interesting addition to the standard eggs benny. Also I bloody loved the potato rosti instead of the usual english muffin. It was a really great twist and tasted so good! Especially with the runny yolk soaked into it! And just look at that yolk…

We rested a while and chatted away, soaking up the sunshine, and then took a look at the dessert menu.

I really wanted the cheesecake as it’s my favourite, but I’m trying to wean myself off these things that aren’t so great for my waistline (I say after eating granola, potato, and ham…), so I went for a ‘fruitier’ (but still not so healthy) option of the Rhubarb pot.

The rhubarb pot consisted of rhubarb, jelly, crushed biscuits, and a small scoop of vanilla ice-cream…it was nice, but the rhubarb tasted quite earthy. I’m not very good with earthy – it’s such a disappointing taste to me and always makes me think the fruit/veg hasn’t been washed properly. I’m guessing it’s just because the rhubarb wasn’t covered in extra sugar though! However, can we take a moment to appreciate how b e a u t i f u l and summery it looks?!

Amy went for the cheesecake with blueberries, and I had major food envy!! It looked incredible and she said it was delicious.

Aside from the disappointing rhubarb our breakfast was pretty darn good! I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to go back just because it’s quite far from me and there are so many similar options in London that are closer. However if you live in the area or are passing through Kings Cross, definitely go and try German Gymnasium out! Also they play German music in the toilets, so there’s that too.

Waistline be damned, cheesecake is always your friend! I'm no good with earthy flavours either, especially when they need to compete with such a gorgeous cheesecake on the menu x

Brunch in the sunshine, is there any better way to celebrate the start of summer? This place looks great although I agree, adding eggs florentine to the menu would be a big plus! xxx
