Best Cities to Visit in Europe (by Season).

Having spent most of my life living in London, I’ve grown up flying off to Europe for weekend breaks, week-long adventures, and even day trips.

I constantly get asked which cities people should visit and at which time of year, so I thought it was about time I put together a huge bumper guide for you all!

Europe is endlessly beautiful, and each country has their own rhythm and charm. While summer trips to the Mediterranean are always magical, some of my favourite European adventures have actually happened in autumn, winter, or spring.

Whether you love wandering through Christmas markets, chasing the northern lights, or sipping coffee at a sun-dappled café terrace, there’s a perfect European city for every season.

Here are my picks for the best cities to visit in Europe all year round — from crisp autumn escapes to balmy summer favourites!

So, let’s jump into the best cities to visit in Europe!

Best Places to Visit in Europe in Autumn

Reykjavík, Iceland

There’s something truly special about Reykjavík in autumn.

The city is calm after the busy summer season, and the golden light makes everything feel cinematic.

Spend your days exploring colourful streets, dipping into cosy coffee shops, and venturing out to the Blue Lagoon or the Golden Circle.

As the nights grow longer, you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights dancing across the sky — it’s pure magic.

Helsinki, Finland

I completely fell in love with Helsinki when I visited in autumn 2019. A weekend in Helsinki is all about crisp air, art, and incredible food! And of course…sauna culture!

The Finnish capital has a cool, minimalist aesthetic and a fascinating mix of design and nature.

Visit the Design District, take a sauna at Löyly overlooking the sea, and enjoy Nordic comfort food at its finest.

The autumn colours are spectacular, with golden trees framing the city’s modern architecture.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest might just be Europe’s most underrated city.

In autumn, the crowds have gone, but the weather is still mild enough to stroll along the Danube and admire the grand architecture.

I visited in autumn 2014 and honestly, I’ve been dreaming of going back ever since.

The city’s thermal baths are even more inviting as the air turns cool. Soak under the stars at Széchenyi Baths, or explore the atmospheric ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter.

Oh, and don’t forget to have a Langos!

Budapest has that perfect blend of elegance and edge.

Kraków, Poland

Kraków is enchanting at any time of year, but it really shines in autumn.

The old town looks beautiful framed by amber leaves, and there’s a quiet charm in wandering its cobbled streets with a warm pretzel or coffee in hand.

Visit Wawel Castle, Kraków Salt Mine, the Cloth Hall, and the poignant history of the Jewish Quarter.

Kraków’s cosy cafés and hearty Polish dishes are the perfect comfort for crisp autumn days. Also, make sure you book dinner at Copernicus!

Edinburgh, Scotland & Wrexham, North Wales

Few places do autumn quite like Scotland and North Wales.

Think fiery red hillsides, misty lochs, and historic cities like Edinburgh that feel straight out of a fairytale.

Explore Edinburgh’s old town or take a road trip through the Highlands, where the scenery is jaw-droppingly beautiful.

In North Wales, head to Snowdonia for rugged hikes, ancient castles, and warm pubs with roaring fires. And don’t forget to visit Wrexham!!

Best Places to Visit in Europe in Winter

Bergen, Norway

Bergen is a winter dream.

Aftab and I spent a winter weekend in Bergen in January 2023 and had the best time!!

Nestled between mountains and fjords, this colourful little city feels like something out of a storybook.

Wander through the UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf, take the funicular up Mount Fløyen for sweeping snowy views, and warm up with fresh fish stew in a harbour café.

It’s the perfect base for exploring Norway’s fjords or chasing the northern lights.

Paris, France

I’ve visited Paris in every season, but there’s something impossibly romantic about Paris in winter (especially at Christmas).

The crowds are smaller, the lights are twinkling, and the city feels more intimate.

Spend your days museum-hopping (the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay are blissfully quiet), visit Saint Chapelle, linger over coffee and croissants in Left Bank cafés, and watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle at dusk.

Wrap up warm, and you’ll have the city almost to yourself.

Bologna, Italy

Bologna is a foodie paradise, and in winter, it’s at its most comforting.

The portico-covered streets are perfect for rainy days, and the air smells faintly of espresso and truffle.

My friends and I spent a winter weekend in Bologna in December 2019 to dine at Osteria Francescana, aka the 2019 Best Restaurant in the World, and we had such a great weekend!!

Settle into cosy trattorias (make sure you visit Trattoria Leonida) for tagliatelle al ragù, mortadella, and a glass of red wine.

Bologna feels authentic and grounded, with just enough student energy to keep it lively (Nu Lounge was a lot of fun!!)

Tatras Mountains, Slovakia

For a proper winter wonderland, head to the Tatras Mountains.

The Slovakian side is quieter and more affordable than its Alpine cousins, but every bit as beautiful.

My friend Shervon and I visited in February 2014, and I’ve recommended it to sooo many people since then!

Visit Jasna with Chopok Peak and Demänovská Cave of Liberty in Liptov, go to the STUNNING Lomnicky Peak in the High Tatras, and don’t miss Strbské Pleso & Tatralandia!

London, UK

Yes, I might be biased — but London in winter is truly magical.

The Christmas lights, festive markets, and cosy pubs make the city feel alive with Christmas cheer.

Go ice skating at Somerset House, see the lights on Regent Street, or enjoy a festive afternoon tea.

It’s cold, yes, but there’s no better time to see London sparkle.

Best Places to Visit in Europe in Spring

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam in spring is pure joy.

The canals are lined with tulips, the trees burst into bloom, and the city shakes off winter with a newfound energy.

Rent a bike, explore the museum quarter, and take a day trip to Keukenhof Gardens to see millions of tulips in full colour.

Spring also means café terraces reappearing — perfect for sipping wine by the water.

I’ve visited in both spring and summer, and I’d 100% go back during spring (my summer visit scarred me as it was during a 40 degree heatwave).

Fethiye, Turkey

For sun and sea before the summer crowds arrive, Fethiye is ideal.

The weather is already warm, the beaches are peaceful, and the turquoise coast looks incredible in spring light.

I loved my stay at Hillside Beach Club back in 2019!

Take a boat trip around the islands, explore the ancient ruins of Kayaköy, and enjoy seafood by the harbour as the sun sets.

It’s blissfully relaxed this time of year.

Isles of Scilly, UK

Located just off the Cornish coast, the Isles of Scilly are one of Britain’s best-kept secrets.

I must admit, I’m very biased — my grandad’s family are from Tresco (one of the islands) which is home to the beautiful Tresco Abbey Gardens.

However, the Isles of Scilly is paradise and well worth visiting!

In spring, wildflowers blanket the islands and the turquoise water sparkles under the sun.

The pace of life here is slow and soothing, think coastal walks, local markets, and cream teas with a sea view.

It’s the perfect UK getaway if you love nature and tranquillity.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon in spring is bright, breezy, and endlessly beautiful. And the seafood is incredible!!

I spent just 24 hours in Lisbon and had such a fun short weekend trip.

Explore Alfama’s winding streets, hop on tram 28, and enjoy fresh seafood with a glass of vinho verde.

It’s warm enough to sit outdoors, but not yet sweltering, making it the perfect time to visit before the summer crowds.

Cologne, Germany

Cologne is one of Germany’s most charming cities, and it really comes alive in spring.

One of my ancestral homes, the city can sometimes get a bad rep, but I promise there’s so much beauty if you look beneath the 1960s brutalist facade.

The Rhine promenade bursts with flowers, outdoor cafés reopen, and the city hosts festivals almost every weekend.

Climb the cathedral for panoramic views, visit the Chocolate Museum, and stroll along the river as the sun sets. And make sure you stop to admire the few historical buildings left in the city (most of it was bombed during WW2).

For a wonderfully relaxed and cultural city break, you can’t go wrong with a weekend in Cologne.

Best Places to Visit in Europe in Summer

Rome, Italy

There’s simply nowhere like a girls trip to Rome in summer.

Yes, it’s busy and hot, but it’s also utterly captivating.

Ancient ruins, incredible food, and golden sunsets that make the whole city glow.

Start your mornings early at the Colosseum or the Pantheon, then linger over long lunches of cacio e pepe and gelato in shady piazzas.

Rome is chaotic and beautiful in equal measure.

Check out my guide on Rome’s unmissable restaurants!

La Buvette Rome

Kotor, Montenegro

Kotor is one of Europe’s most beautiful coastal towns, nestled between mountains and the Adriatic.

Aftab and I visited in 2023 when we did a Croatia & Montenegro roadtrip, and we completely fell in love with both Kotor and Dubrovnik!

Kotor is a walled old town, with a maze of stone streets, pretty squares and sea views around every corner.

Spend your weekend in Kotor wandering, swimming, and sailing, then climb to the fortress for the best view in Montenegro.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Few cities are as instantly recognisable as Dubrovnik. Its terracotta rooftops and sparkling blue sea are truly postcard perfection!

Walk the city walls, take a dip in the Adriatic, and enjoy seafood dinners overlooking the harbour.

It’s busy in summer, yes, but it’s also breathtakingly beautiful, and well worth the hype.

Make sure you go for dinner at Azur, and cocktails at Beach Bar Dodo!

A summer weekend in Dubrovnik is just what the doctor ordered.

Côte d’Azur, France

The Côte d’Azur is summer glamour at its finest.

From Nice to Cannes and Saint-Tropez, the French Riviera sparkles with blue skies, golden beaches, and endless rosé.

Explore coastal towns, take scenic drives, and spend long afternoons people-watching by the sea.

My Aussie bestie and I roadtripped the French Riviera back in 2018 and it was honestly one of the best trips I’ve ever done.

It was elegant, timeless, and pure magic.

Kefalonia, Greece

Of all the Greek islands, Kefalonia might be the most underrated.

It’s lush, green, and surrounded by turquoise waters that look too perfect to be real.

The pace is slower here than in Mykonos or Santorini — expect hidden coves, pretty villages, and family-run tavernas serving incredible seafood.

And don’t forget to visit the breathtaking Melissani Cave!

It’s the perfect balance of beauty, calm, and authenticity.

My Favourite European Cities for Every Season

What I love most about Europe is how every season transforms it!

The same city can feel entirely different in autumn mist or summer sun, and that’s what makes travelling around the continent so special.

Whether you’re chasing Northern Lights in Iceland, sipping wine by the Danube, or eating pasta al fresco in Rome, there’s always another corner of Europe waiting to surprise you.

So pack your bags, pick your season, and get exploring!!
