Nestled inbetween the tourist-traps of Regent and Carnaby Streets, is a little slice of America. I love my American BBQ food, I love nothing more than ribs, brisket, and cornbread. And
Shotgun BBQ from the people behind
The Lockhart near my office in Marylebone, delivered some of the best pork belly and brisket I’ve ever had outside of the USA.
It came recommended from the lovely Colleen, and as she’s a Kansas City native, I trusted her opinion and persuaded Jasiminne it would be a great idea to plan our upcoming NYC trip there, whilst feasting on yummy BBQ food before my operation two days later and soft-food diet for 10 days after that.
It was a quiet Monday evening in the restaurant, so we got a booth right under a skylight (hello, photos people) by the bar, and checked out the menu.
We basically ordered the same as Colleen; Jasiminne got the Pork Belly, I got the half rack of Baby Back Ribs, and we shared a bowl of Brisket and a bowl of the creamed potato. While Jasiminne was good and stuck to water, I went for a traditional homemade lemonade (this isn’t on the menu, but just ask for it) which was ah-mazing. So refreshing, and so yummy!
Gradually the food came out, and while I wasn’t brave enough to try the ‘KC Hot’ sauce, I did have the KC sauce and it was awesome.
The brisket burnt ends were incredible. Absolutely incredible, like the best brisket burnt ends I have EVER had. I mean, it was just perfection.
I tried a bit of Jasiminne’s pork belly and that was pretty darn awesome too. My ribs were good, had a lot of flavour even without any sauce, and were the biggest ribs I’ve ever seen in my life. However, the meat was quite tough and it didn’t just fall off the bone. I really had to make a massive effort to cut the meat off (I’m a weakling so this kinda hurt my hand, haha), so was a little disappointed with this and I definitely left a fair amount of meat on the bone because I just couldn’t get it all off.
Also the creamed potato was so good we couldn’t get enough of it…
We decided to share dessert, and had the
banoffee pie. It was incredible, and not too sickly which was
nice.
The restaurant itself has a very southern feel to it, and it totally reminded me of my roadtrip around the
deep south of America with my family when I was 14! Those cute bars and restaurants in the small towns that are all rustic and make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time.
Despite the too-tough ribs, they still tasted incredible and the rest of the food was just delicious! And it wasn’t badly priced either, all of our food plus my drink and service came to around £55. Definitely head to
Shotgun for some proper BBQ food when you’re next in the area!

Looks like a great place to go when you've really worked up an appetite
It was quite the 'last supper'! And LOL at that smmmmexy photo of me – it totally sums up how amazing the potato puree is. Give me more! x
Posh, Broke, & Bored
I *love* the look of that banoffee pie! Just had a read of your post on the operation right now too, hope you're well on the road to recovery – sounds like its been a painful time… xx
You definitely went out with a bang, this looks incredible! I'll have to check whether they do gluten free… Have you been to Kua ‘Aina nearby? It's an amazing Hawaiian burger place. I highly recommend it! I hope your recovery is going well and you're back on fine eating form asap so you can try it out 🙂
Wow! I had given up on authentic American BBQ food in London, but if someone from Kansas recommends it, you can't argue. Great to discover a new place, especially in an area I visit and write about on my blog often!
